Garda Scammers Pose as Authorities to Trick Hoteliers and Merchants

They pose as Carabinieri when making phone calls to hoteliers, shopkeepers, artisans, and restaurateurs in the Middle and Upper Garda areas, offering subscriptions to magazines of the force.

They are not military personnel, but scammers who, from time to time, claim to belong to the finance department, police, fire brigade, or municipal authorities.

How to recognize scams and how to react

They often propose subscriptions to non-existent magazines or magazines that have nothing to do with law enforcement agencies.

So, be careful and immediately notify the real Carabinieri — simply dial 112 — as soon as you suspect you’ve been targeted by someone who,

refuses to show up when they are after money.
