Assault at Madonna della Scoperta Exhibit in Brescia, Authorities Investigate

A Giovanni Fattori’s painting, **“Assalto a Madonna della Scoperta”**, is on display at **Palazzo Reale in Milan** as part of the exhibition **“I Macchiaioli”**, which brings together **over 100 works**. The painting, preserved at the **Museo Civico “Giovanni Fattori” in Livorno**, is linked to the **Risorgimento** and to the memory of the **Battle of San Martino**, with references to **Brescia**.

The artwork depicts an episode from **24 June 1859** during the **Second Italian War of Independence**, when Piedmontese forces clashed with the Austrians near the sanctuary. Fattori developed the subject after visiting the battlefield sites and producing sketches of the **San Martino** and **Madonna della Scoperta** area; alongside the large canvas, he also created smaller works inspired by the same historical events. The exhibition also reconstructs the Macchiaioli experience from **1848 to 1872**, featuring artists including **Fattori, Silvestro Lega, and Telemaco Signorini**, and is organized into **nine sections** covering themes from national identity to the aftermath of revolutionary ideals. A multimedia component includes **16 audio stories** via QR codes and a **12-episode podcast series** produced by **24Ore Podcast** for Radio 24 and major audio platforms.
