Alcide Morani, Father of Sailing in Toscolano Maderno, Dies During Italian Class Championship

Alcide Morani, a historic figure in sailing and founder of the Circolo Vela Toscolano Maderno, has died aged 81 on Friday, 19 June, while the club was hosting the Campionato Italiano Classe Fun. The news was confirmed this morning after a long illness, which he had been battling for some time.

A surveyor and for years a television editor, Morani served as director and filmmaker for Radio Tele Garda. In 1974, he helped establish the Toscolano Maderno sailing club and led it as its driving force and president for nearly half a century, a role he stepped down from a couple of years ago. An avid racer, he won the European title in the Fun class in 2013 and taught generations of sailors, including Giulia Conti, a multiple world and European champion who competed in four Olympics and, in 2024, won the first Women’s America’s Cup as a co-helmsman for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli’s women’s team. The Campionato Italiano Classe Fun began yesterday in Toscolano Maderno.
