Viale Gennari Reopens in Sirmione After Parco Maria Callas Works
Sirmione has reopened Viale Gennari to the public following the completion of the first phase of extraordinary maintenance works, which also involved the Parco Maria Callas. The project is aimed at improving safety, accessibility and the overall quality of public spaces in one of the area’s most recognizable parts of the municipality.
The works included resurfacing Viale Gennari, upgrading underground utilities, reorganising pedestrian routes and securing historic trees. The plan also focused on protecting the arboreal heritage and refurbishing the internal paths of Parco Maria Callas to strengthen its role as a public space for stopping, welcoming visitors and reaching panoramic viewpoints. A new direct connection to the lakeside is being created, with a staircase and an accessible ramp for people with reduced mobility, along with a new lighting system integrated into the landscape; preliminary archaeological checks found no remains along the route of the new staircase.
The intervention is split into two lots, with a total investment of €970,000 (€638,000 for the works). The lawn restoration and completion of new planting will be carried out next autumn. Mayor Luisa Lavelli said the project will return an “identity” place to the community by making it safer, more welcoming and barrier-free.
