Foibe Victims Recognition: National Committee Established

Italy has introduced recognition for the victims of the Foibe killings and the Julian-Dalmatian exodus, with the measure also applying to the municipality of Gargnano and involving the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of the Interior. The framework follows amendments to Law 30 March 2004, No. 92.

By a decree dated 19 December 2025, the Prime Minister’s Office set up a committee tasked with examining applications submitted by relatives of people killed and “infoibati.” The committee assesses requests not only on administrative grounds but also from a historical perspective, including verifying claims related to the Foibe tragedy. Applications may also be filed by the mayor of the municipality where the victim was born; if that municipality is no longer within Italian territory, eligible applicants include historical associations of Istrian, Fiuman and Dalmatian exiles and the Lega Nazionale di Trieste. The committee is also responsible for promoting initiatives to identify victims so that eligible parties can apply for the “La Repubblica italiana ricorda” metal badge and the associated diploma, as updated by Law 21 February 2014, No. 16, with details published in an announcement by the Comune di Gargnano.
