Funeral of Pope Francis: Tribute in Rome and Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore
Today, April 26, the funeral of Pope Francis will take place in Rome, with a massive turnout expected in St. Peter’s Square. It is estimated that over 200,000 faithful will gather to pay tribute to the Pontiff, who has touched the hearts of many with his message of simplicity. The funeral Mass will begin at 10:00 AM and will be officiated by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, alongside more than 200 cardinals and 700 bishops and priests. The celebration will be broadcast live by Vatican Media in 15 languages.
At the conclusion of the Mass, around 11:30 AM, a funeral procession will set off towards the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, following a symbolic route through the historic center of the city. The Pope’s coffin will be visible to the faithful on a modified popemobile, and arrival at the basilica is expected at 12:00 PM. There, he will be greeted by a representation of those who found their voice during Francis’s pontificate, including the poor and migrants. The burial will take place in a simple grave, in accordance with the wishes expressed by the Pope himself during his ministry.
