The Veneto Region has recently established the Register of Professional Fishermen, setting a limit of 75 permits for the practice of professional fishing along the Veronese shore, in line with existing regulations on the Lombard side of Lake Garda. The resolution passed by the regional council on March 24 is based on the current number of 74 registered fishermen in the “Fishing Improvement Plan,” highlighting a situation that necessitates regulation. Applications for registration in the Register must be submitted by May 8 and must meet specific requirements, such as possessing a fishing license and having access to a dedicated vessel.
The president of Coldiretti Verona, Alex Vantini, welcomed this initiative aimed at regularizing fishing activities and curbing illegal practices. However, some fishermen express concerns about the fixed number of licenses, deeming it insufficient relative to demand and thus contributing to the depletion of fish resources in the lake. Additionally, the issue of the ban on the restocking of the lavarello (Coregonus lavaretus), a species considered non-native but subject to discussion among industry professionals, remains unresolved. Coldiretti is working to achieve recognition of the lavarello as a quasi-native species and to enhance the traceability of fish caught in the region.
