Brenner Roadblock on May 30 Sparks Concerns for German Tourism on Garda’s Brescia Shore

An authorized environmental protest will block the Brenner motorway for eight hours on Saturday, May 30, from 11:00 to 19:00, shutting the route between Schönberg and the Italian border in both directions. The interruption, timed to coincide with Pentecost weekend, threatens to significantly disrupt international visitors and the tourism-driven economy around Lake Garda.

The period also includes Ascension on May 14 and Corpus Domini on June 4, with Bavarian holidays from May 26 to June 5 drawing German, Austrian and Swiss travelers. In 2024 the Garda area recorded over 8 million total presences, with nearly half from Germany, making these weeks crucial for hotels, restaurants and local services. “German tourism is not a marginal segment: it’s a structural part of our economy,” said Barbara Quaresmini of Confesercenti Lombardia Orientale. Andrea Maggioni of Fiepet noted the timing is particularly challenging as many families will already be traveling or preparing to depart.

Industry groups are urging Italian and Austrian authorities to review the protest schedule or seek less disruptive solutions, and to mitigate impact on traffic and perception of the destination. Proposals include launching a multilingual communication protocol to inform German and Austrian travelers about critical times, alternative routes and rail options. “Before authorizing such a protest, calendar considerations should have been weighed,” Maggioni added, while Quaresmini emphasized the need for coordinated advance information to protect the Garda image and local livelihoods.
