Civil Protection and Federalism Conference Highlights Lake Garda Tunnel Progress

The national conference on civil protection titled “Civil Protection and Federalism” opened yesterday morning at the Palazzo dei Congressi in Riva.

Hosting the event was the president of the Giunta provinciale del Trentino Lorenzo Dellai, who, along with Franco Barberi, director of the Civil Protection Agency, inaugurated the seminar’s proceedings.

As a prelude to the conference, there was a visit to the construction site of the upcoming “record” tunnel, the Limone tunnel beneath Monte Sperone, on the western shore of Lake Garda.

Barberi’s Speech and Work on the Tunnel

During a brief speech at the northern entrance of the tunnel, Barberi praised the Province of Trento and the company involved for the rapid progress — three months for design and another three for excavation — in constructing a thousand-meter tunnel, which will be open to traffic in a few days.

The head of the national agency expressed satisfaction with the successful collaboration between the State and the Province, emphasizing that the intervention on Lake Garda’s infrastructure had become a priority due to the emergency situation, which had caused various risk scenarios, including numerous landslides induced by last autumn’s bad weather.

Summary of Interventions and Final Discussion

The meeting continued with speeches by Claudio Bortolotti, head of the provincial civil protection, Fabrizio Collini, representative of the two construction companies, and Giovanni Barla, a university professor specialized in rock mechanics.

In the roundtable discussion held in the afternoon, various aspects related to civil protection were examined.

Topics included new responsibilities and the relations between regions and operational forces at the national level.

The conference will continue today and conclude tomorrow.
