Tourism and Employment in Northern Italy: Widespread Irregularities in Contracts
A recent report has revealed that in the tourism and catering sector of Northern Italy, up to seven out of ten contracts exhibit irregularities. The issues include a high reliance on part-time contracts (60%), on-call contracts (55%), and temporary contracts (40%), with 80% of workers classified at the lowest levels of national contracts, some with hourly minimums below 9 euros gross. These figures were discussed during the conference “Let’s Turn Tourism Upside Down,” organized by Filcams Cgil in Desenzano on September 20.
Tourism represents a fundamental part of the economy around Lake Garda, with approximately 14 million annual visitors and an estimated revenue exceeding 4 billion euros. However, the employment situation is concerning: many workers face gray working conditions characterized by unfulfilled contracts. Recently, a venue in Desenzano was fined for contractual and safety violations. Despite the challenges, Mayor Malinverno noted a positive tourism season compared to the previous year, highlighting the resilience of the sector.
