The urban recovery and redevelopment project for Piazza Corlo was officially presented to the community during a meeting held on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at the Sala del Celesti of the Municipality of Lonato del Garda. This initiative aims to enhance one of the city’s historic entrances, reflecting the municipal administration’s commitment to improving public spaces.
Project Details
The initiative, approved by Resolution No. 40 of the Municipal Executive on March 7, 2023, has received funding of 200,000 euros, originally allocated through European funds under the PNRR, which were later converted into ministerial funds. This amount will fully cover the costs of the works.
Historical and Architectural Enhancement
Piazza Corlo holds significant historical importance, serving as the northern entrance to the ancient protective walls of the historic center. The project includes the installation of stone paving in front of the Church of Santa Maria del Corlo, covering an area of approximately 429.50 sqm. The church is characterized by an imposing facade and a bell tower that reaches a height of 25 meters.
To highlight the remains of the partially demolished historic walls, a strip of Botticino stone paving, 80 cm wide, will be created in the central part of the square.
Structural Changes and Traffic
The plan also includes resurfacing the northern portion of the square (approximately 648 sqm) and replacing the existing roundabout with a new landscaped roundabout, at the center of which a large tree (Quercus Robur) will be planted. To promote pedestrian access in front of the church, significant changes to the surrounding parking areas are planned: the currently existing stalls will be removed while modifications will be made to the parking on the opposite side to create five parking spaces.
Parking Regulations
The parking regulations will undergo changes; specifically, the five parking spaces on the northern side will be subject to temporary parking limited to 30 minutes, from 07:00 to 19:00. Additionally, alternatives are being considered to ensure adequate parking options in the surrounding areas during the construction phases.
Communication and Collaboration with the Community
Mayor Roberto Tardani emphasized the importance of the church as a cultural and tourist asset for Lonato del Garda. He stated that the project will not only enhance the aesthetics of the area but will also provide new commercial opportunities through the creation of pedestrian spaces. Tardani remarked: “Having a pedestrian space that allows citizens and visitors to appreciate and enjoy the square is an opportunity to encourage the opening of public establishments.”
The municipal administration intends to maintain an open dialogue with local representatives and the Merchants’ Association to address any issues related to the construction work.
Construction Timeline
Considering the adverse weather conditions expected during the winter months, the actual start of the work is scheduled for 2025, likely at the beginning of spring. The estimated duration of the intervention will be between 60 and 90 days, allowing for effective planning of the necessary activities without compromising services to the community during the operations.
