In recent hours, over 5,000 young carpions have been released into Lake Garda, marking a significant initiative for the conservation of this endemic species. The operation was carried out at the regional fish hatchery in Desenzano del Garda, with the support of the Lombardy Region. Unlike in 2023, when the “seeding” of wild-born fish took place, this time the decision was made to release fry raised in captivity. This action represents a crucial step in strengthening the carpion population and underscores the importance of collaboration among institutions, local associations, and communities in safeguarding lake biodiversity.
The “Salvacarpio Project,” active since 2011, continues to prove an effective model for the conservation of endangered species. The regional councilor for Agriculture highlighted that having stable breeders allows for envisioning a future where the carpion can be revitalized rather than merely protected. The presence and demographic strengthening of the carpion not only contribute to the ecological balance of the lake ecosystem but also represent significant cultural and economic value for the area. With measures such as the fishing ban introduced in 2015, the protection of the carpion has become increasingly essential for preserving this internationally recognized natural heritage.
