Nago-Torbole Secures Tunnel Shift to Alleviate Traffic Concerns
Good news comes from Trento, in essence, according to the mayor of Nago-Torbole, Giuseppe Parolari. In truth, these news arrived just a few days ago in all households along with the magazine «Trentino in movimento». It concerns the highway intervention program planned by the Dellai administration for the coming years.
The route modification and project details
But for Parolari, this clarification is necessary. On page 42, a map shows what is expected to be the new connection between passo san Giovanni and the low Sarca plain. The estimated cost is 90 billion lire for building a tunnel under the mountain next to the town.
The route has been modified (here’s the good news) compared to the 2000 variant project of the provincial urban plan. The route «has been contested by us regarding the tunnel entrance at Nago», Parolari points out. In fact, a municipal council was convened last November to reaffirm that the idea of placing the tunnel entrance too close to the town was a poor decision.
This resulted in a motion, which, of course, called for moving the entrance as far away from the town as possible. Specifically, from the Boia countryside, an area already home to several settlements and still rapidly expanding in development.
The new configuration and expectations
The request has been granted, as the mayor reports, «the tunnel entrance has been significantly moved away from Boia, shifted more to the northeast, near the san Giovanni-Mala intersection, where it quickly enters rock, so much so that the new planned tunnel is 1620 meters long compared to the approximately 1000 meters of the previous plan».
Therefore, Parolari is satisfied with the decision made. «The exit of the tunnel onto the Maza has also been moved further north. It seems that even the Vignole interchange has been shifted further south compared to the initial plan, thus moving traffic away from Arco».
All this reduces the length of both the Maza and the road that, along the hillside, leads toward the industrial zone of Arco, and consequently the length of the entrance/exit road from Alto Garda towards Rovereto». Parolari concludes with an aspiration shared by the whole community: «That the construction work begins as soon as possible and that the chaotic traffic choking Nago and Torbole is thus alleviated».
