Trento Plans Rapid Construction of Riva-Limone Tunnel to Reopen Gardesana

The stretch of Gardesana that connects Limone to Riva, currently closed due to a landslide, can be reopened not certainly because of government intervention, but rather thanks to the determination and promptness of the Provincia autonoma di Trento.

“There appears to be no other strategy than the one the Province, the Mountain Community, and the municipalities of Alto Garda are already practicing,” said the president of the Provincia di Brescia, Alberto Cavalli, who attended a meeting in Rome with the public works assessor Mauro Parolini, local administrators of Alto Garda, technicians from the Provincia di Trento, and Anas.

Goals and Activities

“With Trento, one must guarantee on one side the definitive solution through the construction of the new Riva-Limone tunnel, and on the other, the implementation of all necessary works on Gardesana to enable a partial opening by summer, to save at least part of the tourist season.”

“But on this front,” Cavalli continues, “there has been no new development from the meeting at the Ministry. We need to wait for the opinion of the scientific commission made up of Brescia and Trento technicians, whose decision will be announced in March.”

Projects and Resources

Meanwhile, fortunately, good news arrives from Trento: the Provincia autonoma plans to complete the tunnel between Riva and Limone within four months and also has the 70 billion euros necessary to carry out the work.

The project for the new tunnel is already prepared, and moreover, given the urgency of the work, it is possible to shorten bureaucratic procedures and avoid a European tender process.

Excavation will begin simultaneously on four fronts and proceed very rapidly; in the meantime, Trento has already allocated 11 billion euros for the stabilization of unstable rocky cliffs, clearing, and securing the portion of coastal road now buried by debris.
