The Free Museum Sunday on Lake Garda returns on October 4, 2026, granting complimentary public access to the primary state-managed archaeological and monumental sites across the territory.
Coordinated by the Italian Ministry of Culture, the monthly initiative involves historical complexes administered by the Direzione Musei Nazionali Lombardia along the southern shores of the lake.
Archaeological Areas in Sirmione
In Sirmione, the free admission applies to two of the most visited heritage sites in the entire Garda basin. Visitors can explore the archaeological park of the Catullus Grottoes and the medieval fortification of the Scaliger Castle in Sirmione.
At the Catullus Grottoes, the itinerary covers the remains of the grand Augustan-era residential villa spanning nearly two hectares at the tip of the peninsula, alongside the National Archaeological Museum which preserves architectural elements, mosaics, and surviving fresco decorations. At the Scaliger Castle, visitors gain access to the internal courtyard, the medieval curtain walls, and the exceptional fourteenth-century fortified dock, a testament to Scaliger military engineering.
Desenzano Roman Villa and Access Guidelines
Along the Brescian lakeside promenade, the initiative also opens the doors to the Roman Villa and Antiquarium of Desenzano del Garda. The complex is noted for its extensive polychrome mosaic floors dating to the fourth century AD, depicting intricate hunting and vintage scenes.
Visits follow the standard holiday operating hours of the individual institutions. Where required, advance booking is highly recommended. Further information and ticketing details are available through the official Musei Italiani application.
