Arco Celebrates Rebirth of its Historic Schützen Company and Traditions

The colorful uniform is unmistakable: leather trousers, a vest, and above all, a large hat with a feather plum to sit atop the head. They are the Schützen. Those who were once the armed guards of their territory.

Recruited exclusively from the local population, also to lend support to the defense of the Empire in backing the regular troops, naturally their number was based on the needs of the moment. They will parade through the city (photo) today and tomorrow with entirely peaceful intentions.

Grouped into different companies coming together for a general assembly from all over the region, indeed from Tyrol. And it will be a great celebration for two days marking the re-establishment of the Schützen Company of Arco. The “bersaglieri” (light infantry sharpshooters) were also well represented in the lower Trentino. This is demonstrated by four years of studies and research on the region’s past, including a book, two exhibitions, and much other material produced.

The Recognition of Traditions and Historical Roots

Today, finally, the results of this extensive effort are being presented. To “legitimize” the initiative and thus “bring past traditions back to life,” according to the captain of the new company, Vittorino Matteotti. A tradition that is also old in Arco, and which its supporters claim is not merely folklore.

This tradition was interrupted with the advent of the fascist regime in 1922, which forbade it, and was revived in Alto Adige starting in the 1950s. Later, much later in the 1980s, it reemerged in Trentino as well. These roots extend very far back.

As early as 1653, heads of households from Arco, Romarzollo, and Oltresarca obtained the privilege to “bear arms for the defense of their persons and property” around their castle. The newly formed company was named after Archduke Albert, who, during his time in the city, was its promoter and benefactor.

So much so that his financial support led to the construction of a shooting range called after his name. Many will celebrate the event. Several authorities have assured their presence.

The Celebration and Program of Events

The festivities will begin in the late morning, at 11 am, with the official opening of the festival and the gastronomic stand. The activities will continue throughout the day, until midnight, with a detailed program that includes various musical performances by the visiting bands.

Events will resume tomorrow morning at 9:30 am with the gathering of the companies and delegations. The highlight will naturally be the departure and parade of the companies and bands, scheduled for 11:45 am. The final conclusion will be at 12 am as well.
