Desenzano Installs Italy’s First Wireless Dual-Chamber Pacemaker at ASST Garda
ASST Garda has carried out the first wireless bicameral leadless pacemaker implant at the Hospital of Desenzano, on 1 July 2026, marking a new step in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. The hospital says it is among the few facilities in Lombardy and Italy authorised to use this latest-generation system.
The implanted device consists of two miniaturised capsules that communicate to synchronise activity between the right atrium and right ventricle, eliminating the need for traditional pacing leads and reducing risks linked to conventional catheter-based systems. If required, a second capsule can be added in the right atrium to achieve effective bicameral pacing, with the capsules placed via a minimally invasive transcatheter procedure that avoids external incisions or subcutaneous pockets.
The first procedure was performed on a patient with advanced atrioventricular block under local anaesthesia, allowing a rapid discharge and quick return to daily activities, including sport. Battery life is expected to exceed 15 years, and the team involved included Dr Luca Bontempi, Dr Tommaso Bignotti and Dr Sofia Del Gigante, supported by a specialised nursing staff led by coordinator Marina Bertoli. ASST Garda’s general director Roberta Chiesa said the technology is an important milestone for the area, aimed at delivering safer, effective and less invasive care.
