On a day filled with emotions and significance, the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, participated in the celebrations for the 160th anniversary of the Italian Red Cross. The event took place on Saturday, June 22, with stops in Castiglione delle Stiviere and Solferino, historical places linked to the birth of the humanitarian organization.

Arriving in the afternoon at the International Red Cross Museum in Castiglione, the President then went to Solferino to inaugurate the traditional celebratory torchlight procession. During the event, Mattarella spoke from the stage in Castello Square in front of about 5,000 volunteers.

The Importance of Volunteering

In his speech, Mattarella emphasized the importance of volunteering in Italy: “Volunteering, in its various forms, is a source of pride for our country. It transmits precious energy. The values it expresses are part of the culture and the very identity of our people.” He highlighted how these values are deeply rooted in the daily life of Italians and contribute to defining Italy as a country of great civilization.

Appeal to Human Dignity

The President did not fail to address sensitive issues such as the illegal exploitation of labor. He mentioned the recent case of Satnam Singh, an immigrant worker who tragically died after being denied assistance: “Grave and alien episodes and behaviors like the one recorded three days ago clash… A form of work that manifests itself with inhumane characteristics and falls within a phenomenon – which often emerges – of exploitation of the work of the weakest and most defenseless.”

Mattarella praised the Red Cross for its commitment to promoting respect for human dignity and solidarity: “Against these phenomena, the values and message spread by the Red Cross stand out and reassure.”

Recognition from the Italian Red Cross

Rosario M.G. Valastro, President of the Italian Red Cross, expressed gratitude to Mattarella: “I want to thank you for your daily work in placing your concern, which is also ours, for ongoing armed conflicts and the humanitarian tragedy we are witnessing, at the center of the international agenda.”
