The Councillor for Agriculture of the Lombardy Region, Alessandro Beduschi, expressed satisfaction following the European Parliament’s approval of a proposal that reduces the level of protection for the wolf from “strictly protected” to “protected.” This vote, which took place on Thursday, May 8, 2025, is seen as a significant step towards a more realistic and sustainable wildlife management approach regarding the presence of wolves in the Lombardy territory. Beduschi emphasized the importance of recognizing the challenges faced by those living and working in mountainous and rural areas.
The Councillor reiterated that the Region’s stance is based on scientific evidence rather than ideology, asserting that coexistence between humans and wildlife is only possible through concrete measures. These must ensure the safety of livestock breeders and support their activities without compromising ecological balance. Thus, the EU’s decision represents an opportunity to improve wolf management in Lombardy.
